Illustration from “Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium. Pugnae Bestiarorum” (“With wild beasts, birds, fish”), the famous series of hunting engravings by Jean Stradanus, printed in Antwerp in 1585.
The first edition printed in Antwerp around 1585, prior to the printing of the address title “Antverpiae, apud Joannem Gallacum” published by Galle, comprised 43 unnumbered plates all engraved by Galle with a dedication page to Cosimo de Medici. After this edition the series was expanded to 104 plates engraved by A. Collaert, J. Collaert, C. Galle I and C. de Mallery.
Condition : In fair condition with some folds, stains, tears in the image and in the border margins. The paper, trimmed, is slightly yellowed. Well-inked otherwise, with great detailed lines. Not framed.
Otter hunt; in the foreground, a huntsman holding a trident, standing on a river bank, is viewed from behind; in the midground, men on boats and on the river banks hunt otters with the aid of dogs; beyond, a bridge and fortified town are seen.
